Summary

El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America, and also one of the most climate-vulnerable in the region, despite sharing only 0.03% of global GHG emissions. The environmental deterioration in El Salvador has been officially recognized by the Ministry of the Environment in its 2017 National State of the Environment Report.

El Salvador has established priorities to include climate-resilient, low-carbon coastal-urban development, improved ecosystem and landscape rehabilitation and forest initiatives. Agriculture and fisheries are considered instrumental to El Salvador’s inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction goals. The key areas of current and future climate change adaptation measures are to focus on urban and coastal development, forestry, sea level rise, and salinization of coastal areas.

Recently, the country has committed to climate adaptation measures as announced during Climate Action Week for Latin America and the Caribbean. At the regional level, El Salvador holds the Pro Tempore Presidency of the Central American Commission on Environment and Development (CCAD), a coalition promiting to integrate and cooperate environmental action across its Member States and improve the quality of life of their populations.
